Mean girls analysis

Mise en scene
  • In the opening the mian character is wearing a red top and green jacket with some jeans. This is very casual and the green jacket shows her nature side of when she lived in Africa. She is wearing her hair up to show this further
  • her parents are also wearing casual clothes
  • The main character, Kady is wearing no make-up to again show this natural side to her.
  • Everyone else, the other characters we later see are also wearing casual clothes like the main character suggesting that she may fit into the school and not get seen as an outcast.
  • Natural lighting is used to give a sense of realism to the film, causing the audience to engage more in the film.
Camera shots and Movements
  • When we are introduced to the parents a low angle shot is used to show the parents talking and looking down to the audience.
  • There is a medium shot of her hugging her mom with an embarrassed facial expression, which was taken in the middle of the action. This shows the close relationship between the two.
  • A medium shot is used because it allows the audience to connect to the characters and allows the audience to get an insight into how each character is feeling. It allows this because in a medium shot we can see the facial expressions and hand gestures, hence why we can see their reaction.
  • Pan is used to follow her while searching for which the pan stops when she crashes into the teacher
Introduction to Characters
  • The opening of mean girls starts with a black screen and just the opening credits are present. Non diegetic music take most of the audiences attention, it is very slow paced and peaceful, with an African aspect involved, this signifies the African side of the main character; which we later find out in the film.
  • She is introduced to be a very nice person and a newbie to the whole school
  • we initially think that the parents are talking to a young child, because of how they it talking to her, as though it is her very first day at infant school, yet she is going to high school.
Creation of enigma

  • The audience look forward to seeing how she will fit into the school
    • especially when she used to be home-schooled
  • We do not know how she will react in school, and how this will have an impact on the close family.

Titles

  • The heading then appears and we fade into the parents.
  • The writing of the credits and the heading is pink, emphasising the girly touch to this teen romantic comedy.
  • they come up on a black screen.

What is significant

  • A voice over is used to show the audience a bit more about her which then goes into detail about her past or what the audience might be thinking. This allows the audience to feel they are involved in her life and therefore pay a lot of attention and bring them into the film; this is because she actually talks to the audience. This makes the film feel very personal.
  • Throughout the voice over various pictures and short clips are used to make her point in the voice over clear or let her thoughts also be expressed in the facial expressions.  By doing this it allows the audience to focus on the different aspects.
  •  she uses other people to make her point when talking about home-schooled children such as the ginger girl who was at a spelling contest and the group of religious boys.
    • this is used to show she is not an outcast like the other home schooled individuals.
  • the use of camera noises and photos to tell the audience about her life
