Analysis of ' confessions of a teenage drama queen'

Mise en scene
  • Confessions of a teenage drama queen starts with an establishing shot of New York.
  • she starts off wearing a black knee length dress with small heels. This emphasises the girly side of her and highlights what most teenagers want
  • We later see her in reality, she is wearing black needed clothes, a black viel over her face and black jewellery.
  • The black colour is a connotation of death, goths and funerals and the audience suspect she is dealing with one of these things, but as the voice over allows us to understand is that she is wearing black because of the move.
  • Natural lighting is used
  • She is wearing neutral make-up

Camera shots and movements
  • Throughout the opening a crane is used to get a birds eye view on the city
  • A pan is used to slide between the two buildings and zoom into a medium shot on a parent saying goodbye to her daughter, they are shown to be very rich living which are expressed in their outfits of dresses and long gloves which reach the elbow
  • medium shot which shows the happy expressions on the character face connoting it is a delight to be left by her parents. This again is wanted by a lot of teenager, to get away from their parents.

Introduction into characters
  • She initially is introduced saying bye to her parents in a over-the-top kind of way.
  • She is shown to be rather wealthy to get the insight that this may in fact be a dream.
  • the characters then become cardboard, reinforces the previous ideas that it is a dream
  • a voice over is used part way through the introduction to give an insight into her thoughts
  • She is shown to love to be the center of attention and goes to great lengths to ensure she it.
  • she is shown to be very unique and possibly suggesting she will be an outcast to other peers.
  • we know she is very fond of a band- which is what a lot of teenagers have in common with her.
  • When we are introduced to the character, a zoom out is used from the book. She is slowly revealed suggesting that she is a lot to take in and so they reveal her slowly to, first of all increase the suspense but also reduce the shock when we initially get introduced.
  • There is a binary opposite shown in what she wants to happen, her dream, and reality, how they were shown to be rich but in reality they are not, they seem to be the complete opposite of one another. Friction is shown between the mother figure and the main character through the dialogue they have with one another and the use of bird poo further anchors the friction.

Creation of enigma
  • We don't know where the family are moving to
  • Why she is so over the top about everything
  • The audience do not know why they are moving
  • We notice she only has a mother with her in the car and don't know who her father is and if he is still alive

Titles
  • opening credits are speeding across the screen and beating to the music, as though they have a pulse.
  • Titles are in blue which is the opposite of what we would expect, as  blue is usually related to boys.

What is significant
  • a voice over is used.
  • She is over-dramatic
  • there is friction between her and her mother connotes a bad relationship between them.
  • There is a huge use of props
