Sydney white analysis

Mis en Scene
  • Jeans, builder shoes and a t-shirt is the main costume found within the characters- even the girl, she seems to be very boyish.
  • Natural lighting is used
  • No make-up
Camera shots and camera movements
  • medium-long shot on vans outside a construction estate, this is significant as it is not the usual opening for a Teen romantic comedies.
  • The use of a Zoom in onto a man signing a card for ‘Syd’
  • High angle shot is used- we look down at her, anchoring she is an outcast and that we sympathise

Introduction to characters
  • All of the male characters are slowly revealed one by one through use of pans, tilts and different shots- at the same time they are signing a card, suggesting they are not the main character.
  • This builds up the expectation that we are going to meet the main chracter
  • The introduction to the character again is very masculine and the audience assume it is a man. This is due to the scrubby Jeans and dirty masculine shoes, very much a counterbalance of what we expect to see.
  • When the character comes from underneath the table, we see that it is a girl with a shirt and her hair tied back. It is quite a surprise for the introduction of the character as all the signs previous to it suggest it will be a man.
  • The fact that she is excited about the thought of getting a hammer as a present very much anchors our thoughts about her.
  • We see the big strong character becoming very soft and emotional at the thought of her leaving suggesting she has been a big part of their life. This gives an insight to the life of the main character and how she has been brought up by men and now as a result acts very masculine.
  • A voice over is used.
  • She is an Outcast

Creation of enigma
  • We initially don't know where her mom is, and what has happened to her
  • The audience don't yet know where she is going to, college, and what will happen their.
  • It is also not made clear for what she is going to college for.

Titles
  • The headings come up on a blue screen in between various clips of different aspects of the constructive sight. While a spot light effect.
  • The colour blue that is used is a counterbalance of what we would expect to see for a romantic comedy as they are usually associated with girls, and blue is stereotypically a colour for boys.
What is significant:
  • The voice-over
  • She is an outcast
  • casual clothes are used
  • very good family at home even without her mother.
